Ask yourself the following questions prior to considering relocating for a job. Write the results of these questions as pros and cons to assist in your decision making.
- How familiar are you with where you want to relocate to, and how similar or different is it from where you currently live?
- If you do not like your job, or if you are terminated, can you easily find another job in the same area?
- Do you have a backup plan to return to your hometown if things go sour? Would this be feasible?
- Do you plan on renting or owning a home?
- What is the cost of living difference? Will your new salary accommodate new living arrangements?
- Where in the new city would you want to live, i.e., subdivisions? If you have children, have you considered school districts? Do you have a support system for your children?
- How close do you want to live to your office location? Do you mind commuting? What is traffic like in the new area?
- What is the climate like in the new area?
- How far away are you from major transportation like an international airport?
- Will the new city accommodate your free time activities: Nightlife, family friendly attractions, variety of restaurants, collegiate and professional sports, etc.?
